Mr. Moreau is invited to 60th AALAS National Meeting to lead Writing SOPs That Work Workshop - November 12, 2009
For the tenth consecutive year Norm Moreau will present his Writing SOPs That Work workshop on November 12, 2009 (http://www.aalas.org/nationalmeeting/workshop_descriptions.pdf), in Denver, Colorado. This interactive workshop is designed for those who are responsible for developing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) at animal care facilities. The workshop begins with an overview of SOPs and why writing effective SOPs is more important today than ever before. A basic SOP writing cycle will be presented for managing an SOP development or upgrade effort. Techniques for interviewing and the use of mind mapping and process mapping as means of drafting SOPs will be discussed. Examples of effective action steps such as sentence structure, use of action verbs, and conditional steps will be presented. The workshop concludes with an introduction to a framework for effectively managing SOPs. Participants will have a greater appreciation for how properly developed and written SOPs can be used to effectively and efficiently manage and operate their facilities. Each participant will receive an updated workbook that will serve as a desktop reference for writing effective SOPs. By the end of the session, participants will have a full understanding of the fundamentals of writing SOPs from both a manager and user perspective; compose SOPs in a clear and comprehensible format, and to use the required steps to develop or upgrade their facility’s SOPs. The target audience is those responsible for developing and maintaining SOPs at their facilities, such as facility managers, veterinarians and veterinarian technicians, team leads, and caretaker staff.

Theseus presents Establishing an Environmental Management System Using ISO 14001 at NCAB - September 2, 2009
Norm Moreau and James Bell will discuss how Establishing an Environmental Management System Using ISO 14001 at the 35th NCAB/AALAS Seminar (on September 2, 2009, http://www.ncabaalas.org/) in Washington, DC. In today’s green conscious society, laboratory animal facilities need to find a systematic approach to managing their environmental footprint. At each turn in an animal care facility, environmental aspects can be found: animal husbandry and veterinary care – biological waste from bedding blood, and blood products; cage wash operations - energy consumption and waste water; and chemical storage and use – chemical waste, spills. Establishing an Environmental Management System (EMS) is a proven management tool for enabling an organization to: identify and control the environmental impact of its activities, products or services; improve its environmental performance; and to implement a systematic approach to setting and reaching its environmental objectives and targets.
